The Earthquake Aftermath: The New Government Middle School at Sahang Hill, AJK
On September 2019, a devastating earthquake struck the region of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. One of the casualties was the Government Middle School in Sahang Hill, Mohra Kikri, Jaatlan, District Mirpur, which was completely destroyed. Located at the epicenter of the earthquake, the school was reduced to rubble, disrupting the education of hundreds of students. However, from the ashes of this tragedy, a beacon of hope has emerged, thanks to the relentless efforts of the Kasguma Health & Welfare Trust (KHWT) and their generous partners.
A Collaborative Effort to Rebuild
Recognising the crucial role that education plays in the development of the community, KHWT took on the challenge of reconstructing the school without delay. With support from the Oak Tree Trust (UK), run by Dr. Ian Charles Robertson, Midland International Aid Trust (UK), and the Wolverhampton Muslim Forum (UK), the project was set in motion. This collaboration between local and international organisations ensured that the new school would not only replace the old structure but also provide an enhanced educational environment for the students.
A State-of-the-Art Educational Facility
The newly constructed Government Middle School at Sahang Hill is a testament to what can be achieved when communities come together with a shared vision. The school now comprises 10 well-equipped classrooms, providing ample space for students to learn and grow. In addition to the classrooms, the school features a large conference room, a vital space for school meetings, events, and extracurricular activities that play a key role in the holistic development of the students.
The new facility also includes a Masjid area, which underscores the importance of spiritual development alongside academic progress. The tiled courtyard provides a clean and aesthetically pleasing environment for students to gather during breaks and for outdoor activities. The modern toilet facilities ensure that the students have access to hygienic and comfortable amenities, which is crucial for their overall well-being.
A Day of Celebration
The new school was officially inaugurated on February 20, 2021, in a ceremony that brought together key figures from the community and beyond. The event was attended by the District Education Officer (D.E.O) of Mirpur, DG Information Raja Azhar Iqbal, Politician Ch. Rukhsar, and many other local representatives. The presence of these dignitaries highlighted the significance of this project, not only for the local community but for the entire region. The children of the new school, who are the true beneficiaries of this effort, also participated in the event, marking a new beginning in their educational journey.
Recognised for Excellence
The school currently educates approximately 300 boys and has quickly gained recognition for its quality of teaching and student progress. In a significant achievement, the school has been awarded by the British Council of Education, a testament to the dedication and hard work of the teachers and staff. This award is a reflection of the school’s commitment to providing high-quality education, which is essential for the future success of its students.
A Model for the Future
The reconstruction of the Government Middle School in Sahang Hill is more than just a building project; it is a symbol of resilience and hope for the community. It demonstrates how, even in the face of adversity, collective efforts can lead to the creation of something stronger and more enduring.
